HEALTH SCREENING & OFA CERTIFICATES

At Elmyo Kennels, we believe in FULL TRANSPARENCY between our families and fellow breeders. 

OUR ADVICE TO FUTURE BUYERS: When searching for your new furry family member, always ask a breeder more than just if their dogs "come with papers." You should ask to SEE the parents' kennel registration certificates, pedigrees, and health testing reports. The right breeder will always provide them to you!

RAISE YOUR STANDARDS: It has become far too common to see KIJIJI ads or other online listings of pups, claiming to be 'Purebred' and 'Health Cleared.' Just a reminder, taking your litter of pups to the vet for their check-up and first shots, does NOT mean they are "health cleared". Health testing involves far more than just having your local veterinarian pick up and examine a dog. 

THE BOTTOM LINE: Anyone can make these sorts of claims, it is our responsibility as buyers and fellow breeders, to ensure they are being honest. Let's work together to make this process SIMPLE again!

The way we see it, if you have them, why not show them off? If the breeder cannot provide these to you before buying a pup, regardless of the reason - it is safe to assume they DO NOT have them, and neither will you if you choose a pup from them. 

We are very proud of our hard work and dedication to our ethical breeding program, and the beautiful dogs that have been produced from it. To make this simpler, we will post our registration certificates, pedigrees, and even health testing reports here for you, as we are proud of them! 

 We recommend you use these as examples of what to look for, when buying a pup, even if you don't choose to buy from us.

75% of ALL dogs are genetic carriers for one or more health conditions. It really is THAT common for dogs to be genetic carriers for certain potential diseases; this is actually the same for us humans. 

There are several types of markers tested for, and they fall into four categories based on how many  

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Being a carrier does not mean that a dog will develop that disease; it means they carry the genotype. Sort of like us as humans, we can be carriers for the gene that produces red hair but not have red hair ourselves. 

This is important for a breeder to know when choosing which dogs they should or should not introduce into their program.  

Some diseases are hereditary; others are not, A dog testing positive for one of the thousands of variants does not necessarily make it ineligible entirely for breeding. 

WHAT? Calm down, here's why.  

An ethical breeder using these sorts of tests on ALL of their dogs, now has the knowledge to ensure these potential health conditions are never passed on to offspring, by selecting the 'right pairing' for each breeding based on their results.
